Jan Brown is an Australian artist who predominantly weaves sculptures using copper wire. Jan’s work connects her to the environment in whichshe lives, walks and travels.
Educated in Ceramics at TAFE Southbank Brisbane and ArchitecturalCeramics at TAFE Eagle Farm in Queensland, Jan has been in manyexhibitions, galleries and won awards for her ceramic worksince 1990. Her work is held in many public and private collections in Australia and overseas.
In 2010, Jan changed direction from working with ceramics to weavingwith metal. This shift was driven by her travels and the need to bepractical with fewer tools. As aresult, the freedom enabled Jan to experiment in sculpting lighting and wallart. Jan’s work is currently held in galleries in Brisbane and Mt Tamborine, Queensland.
In February this year, Jan was a finalist in the Revival Emerging Artist Prize2024. InJune, she was awarded First Prize in the Brisbane Sculpture Festival winning the prestigious Shillam Award for her installation Transformation.This award will assist Jan to further explore larger forms and colour as part of her ongoing investigations into environmental art.
